Air diverter design and development for a Portable Air Conditioner with R134a Refrigerant

Abstract

A mobile air conditioner, SMAC was developed with fiber glass parts. The initial air diverters made of the composite material, they were heavier and had difficulty to change the direction. Also, the evaporator outlet had a small dimensional area to provide both horizontal and vertical changes. In this project plastic molds were designed to give parts to give both vertical and horizontal control of the diverters. Initial part design was done using Solid Works package of solid parts. They were manufactured in the institute additive material adding machines. These were tested and established for functional adherence. Further, mold design for these parts was done on AutoCAD. The parts were made by using the dies designed. Using a jig designed to fit the parts in the mobile air conditioner and fitting a motor to be linked to the remote control. The controlled diverters were evaluated to verify that the required air flow in different directions was obtained as per the requirement. The project was completed in the given limited budget of about rupees thirty thousand or about four hundred dollars. The designed and development parts are used in an improved version of the air conditioner used for R134a refrigerant
